Vin's Insight on: The Umpqua Valley The Umpqua Valley is one of Oregon’s most diverse wine regions. The Region is unique for successfully growing both cool and warm climate varietals. The Umpqua Valley can be split into 3 regions with the city of Roseburg located in the middle. The area north of Roseburg is the cooler climate that is ideal of Pinot Noirs. The area surrounding Roseburg a more intermediate climate allowing for both warm and cool varietals. Finally the region south of Roseburg is ideal for warm climate varietals like Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot. The soils are much like the climate, very diverse. The valley floor levels have mostly deep alluvial or heavy clay materials, while the hillsides and bench locations have mixed alluvial, silt or clay structures-all typically excellent for winegrowing. |
